Proverbs Movement

Prologue and Extended Instruction

Proverbs opens by defining wisdom’s purpose, foundation, and path. The fear of the Lord is named as the beginning of discernment, and wisdom is introduced through parental instruction, public warning, disciplined pursuit, moral protection, warnings against violent companions and sexual folly, and competing invitations from Wisdom and Folly. Chapters 1–9 prepare the reader to enter the sayings collection with the right posture: teachability, reverence, restraint, guarded speech, guarded desire, and a willingness to follow the way that leads to life.
