Judges opens by reviewing Israel’s post-Joshua transition and previewing the covenant crisis that will govern the book. Judah initially takes the lead and early faithfulness still appears in Caleb, Othniel, and Achsah, but partial obedience soon becomes visible through repeated failure to drive out the nations. The angel of the Lord confronts Israel at Bokim, Joshua’s generation passes away, the new generation forgets the Lord’s works, the Judges cycle is named, and God’s decision to leave nations in the land becomes a test that Israel immediately fails through intermarriage and idolatry.
