Prologue and Job’s Lament
Job opens by joining earthly suffering to heavenly contest. The prose prologue establishes Job as righteous, blameless, and upright; the heavenly council exposes Satan’s accusation that worship is transactional; disaster strips Job of wealth, children, and health; and the friends enter in silence. Job’s first speech then breaks the silence with a lament that curses the day of his birth without cursing God, forcing readers to hear righteous anguish before debate begins.
